I finished my mechanical apprenticeship and started work for NSW Railways. After 17 years doing automotive and heavy vehicle maintenance all over the state, I was retrenched and came back to Newcastle looking for work.

My car needed a rego check so I went to my local mechanic and while I was waiting, got chatting to him about trying to find a job. Half an hour later, the same mechanic knocked on my door and offered me a job. I could come and work for him, but there was a catch.

I had to buy the business from him. I’d always wanted to own my own business, but it was a big commitment and we had little kids at the time. My wife and I talked about it, and we decided to say yes.
I worked for Ken for three years before I bought the business from him in March 2000. We’ve been here in Shortland ever since.

After 37 years, I still love being a mechanic and I’m always up for a chat. I really like to look after my customers and take care of them. Employing young mechanics and seeing them achieve, learn and reach their goals is also incredibly satisfying. Having my son Jack work here as the Manager has brought a whole new dimension to the business.
