WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF AGED CARE?

• Aged Care Homes

  Aged care homes are also known as nursing homes or aged care facilities. Residents are given their own room, bed, linen, bedside cabinet, and chairs. The facility is equipped with larger rooms where people can enjoy meals and recreational activities alongside the other residents. Nursing homes can offer low level care or high-level care. High level care includes around the clock supervision, personal care, and nursing care.

  The government can subsidise residential aged care, however residents also contribute to the cost of their care and accommodation.

   

  Home Care Retirement Villages

  Home care retirement villages are a relatively new concept. They usually offer two living options. For those who require low level care, people can live in independent accommodation. However, home care retirement villages also offer high-level residential care accommodation within the same complex.

  In Home Care

  In home care and supports are provided to people living in their own home. These days, in home care is a very popular option for aged care. People prefer to remain living independently in the comfort of their own home. They don’t have the added stress of having to sell their home or move out, and families feel reassured that their loved ones are receiving the care they need.

  The government provides different in home care packages depending on the level of care required. The Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) is an entry-level care package and provides for care services in the home or in the community. 

  For people requiring more help to remain living at home, the government’s Home Care Packages (HCP) offers 4 levels of care packages.

  People receiving CHSP or HCP funding also contribute towards the cost of their care.

  The first steps toward receiving a home care package, is to arrange for an Aged Care Assessment Service (ACAS). This can be done by phoning My Aged Care or by referral from a GP or health care professional.
